Saved by a Super-Hero
Mrs Tong gave birth to her son on 6 November 08 and became variously ill on 25 November from acute liver failure. She was diagnosed as critical unless she could have an emergency liver transplant. No immediate relatives of hers had matching blood type to qualify as a life liver donor. Her brain was starting to swell from liver failure and she only had days to live. Her dire strait condition was reported widely in the local media.
Hong Kong newspapers are filled with sad stories like these, to be followed by a report that the patient died from the disease. This time, a miracle happened, thanks to a super-hero in the form of an anonymous life liver donor. She is a total stranger, feeling convicted to give away the whole of the right lobe of her liver to save another person. She understands the consequences to the life liver donor should anything goes wrong. The 14 hour operation took place on 5 December 08. As on today, everything has been going well. Two lives have been changed forever. The story will change many minds about organ donation and helping out strangers in general. Hong Kong, just like any other place in the world, is filled with love, hope, courage
and beautiful lives.
